How to prevent c. diff in your home

How can C. diff be prevented?

  • Clostridioides difficile, commonly known as C. diff, is a bacterium that can cause severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Here are some ways to prevent C. diff:

  • Proper hand hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom, before eating, and after coming into contact with someone who has C. diff.

  • Antibiotic stewardship: Antibiotics can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in your gut, making you more susceptible to C. diff. Only take antibiotics when they are necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  • Isolation precautions: If you are in a hospital or healthcare facility and have C. diff, you may be placed in isolation to prevent the spread of the bacteria to others.

  • Cleaning and disinfection: C. diff spores can survive on surfaces for long periods of time. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and countertops.

  • Probiotics: Some studies have shown that probiotics, which are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits, may help prevent C. diff infections. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether probiotics are right for you.

  • Remember, prevention is key when it comes to C. diff. If you have any concerns or questions about C. diff, talk to your healthcare provider.

How is C. Diff Diagnosed?

C. diff (Clostridioides difficile) can be diagnosed through various methods. The most common method is through a stool test, where a sample of the patient's stool is analyzed for the presence of C. diff toxins. Another method is through a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, where a flexible tube with a camera is inserted into the colon to look for signs of inflammation or damage caused by C. diff. Additionally, blood tests can be done to check for antibodies against C. diff toxins, but this method is less commonly used. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider if you suspect you have C. diff or are experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain.

Local, prompt & discreet C. Diff. emergency service in Pinellas County

C Diff is a bacteria that spreads through something called "spores" which is an inactive form of C Diff.  The spores are very hardy and can survive on objects and surfaces for very long periods of time, making it easier for the bacteria to spread.  C. Diff spores are easily ingested by touching your mouth after you've touched a contaminated surface or object.  Our decontamination services include a full cleanup of the home and removal of potentially contaminated debris and unwanted items at our client's discretion.  Though bleach is a common and effective chemical to kill C. Diff bacteria, it can leave behind unsafe byproducts that may be harmful to your health.  We use only non toxic, hospital grade sporicidal cleaning agents to disinfect your home so that you may rest assured that your property has been thoroughly sanitized safely.

Preventing The Spread Of C. Diff Clean & Disinfect

C. Diff spores can live on surfaces or clothing for years.  The spores act as a protective shield that bacteria can hide behind while lying dormant.  It's imperative that any affected surfaces be properly cleaned and sanitized to avoid possible exposure.

In 2011 there were over a half million infections in the US alone, 29,000 died within 30 days of the initial diagnosis.  Most cleaning products are ineffective at killing C-Diff spores.  It's important to use either a bleach cleaning solution or a certified sporicidal cleaning agent.  Keep in mind that common alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against C. Diff spores.
